1949 - Wall SD
The following cards depict the history of the famous "Wall Drug Store" in Wall SD. Founded in 1931, the business of owners Ted and Dorothy Hustead was going poorly in the beginning. When Dorothy had the idea to offer customers free ice water things changed dramatically: From then on the business was thriving, the size of the shop growing (and the number of cars)! This photo was taken ca.1948/'49. It shows a small place with a 1948 Pontiac, parked together with a 40's Buick. No ice water yet! Note the totem.
The following card was already published after the glorious idea offering ice water. It is now 'officially' named "The Ice Water Drug Store". Cars from the fifties are parked in front, the totem has somehow 'grown' into the enlarged business building (click to see the details bigger). See more on the next page.
